What
we do
At House of Canvas we make all kinds of custom tents - from medieval pavilions, burgundians and soldiers’ tents for re-enactment, to modern caravan canopies and garden sun (and rain!) awnings.
All our period tents are made from waterproof 16oz cotton canvas, available in many colours, and come complete with pegs and groundsheet.
We make some standard tents, but if you require a unique tent or an awning to fit your existing tent, we are more than happy to make it for you.
Also for the re-enactment market, we make arming doublets and padded jacks, both available either machine sewn for battlefield wear or hand sewn for living history. We can make these in most colours, your house colours, for example, and for battlefield wear we include a layer of canvas to protect the garment against armour rub (and spear points!).

sizes and prices etc.
Who we are
We are Martin (Noddy) and Liz Hutton, and
we have a brand new son, Christopher.
We have been re-enacting for just over 13 years now, starting with the English Civil War, and moving backwards in time to the Wars of the Roses. We are members of the Courteneye Household and Companie.
Martin worked as a sailmaker for nearly 24 years
until spring 2007 when we finally took the plunge and decided to set up on our
own. He has been making tents for fellow re-enactors for 10 years.
He completed 4 years as a sailmaker’s
apprentice in 1988, having started at H & D Daniels, moving on to South
West Sails and then going to Penrose Sailmakers where he has worked for the
past 19 years.
In that time he has worked on everything ranging
from an 8ft dinghy to super-yachts, square-riggers and merchant ships.
Apart from sails, his work has included designing and making cockpit
covers, over-all winter covers, internal and external upholstery, bags, deck
covers, car hoods (Rolls Royce, Bentley, Triumph Stag and Spitfire, Mini Moke,
Morris 1000 to name a few!), canvas awnings for Euro Disney, aircraft covers,
helicopter covers, decking canopies, sun shades, garden swing-loungers, even
40mm bofors and 20mm oerlikon gun covers for the RN!
