Gas Lantern
 

Featured item found buried in rafters between ceiling & roof of outbuilding (former 1800's Blacksmith Shop - now modern day garage; used primarily for storage by elderly homeowner) located at private residence on Maryland Avenue, Washington, D.C., during roof repairs, in 1992.
Homeowner (age 94) said to be sole survivor of her family tree.

Pre-Edison

Recorded in Family Bible as property of great-grandfather; President's Blacksmith and "The Keeper of the Lamps" during congressional sessions in the Capitol Building [Dome], Washington, D.C.
Gifted to him upon upgrades from gas to electric, for his services then. Estimated era: President Chester Arthur. Early 1800's. Pre-Edison.
Said to be made in France as early as the mid to late 1700's. 1 of only 200 (this) gas lanterns made.
Beveled glass, corners trimmed in brass, bell top, decorative top & bottom brass trim and brass bottom plate, gas fixture - remains in fair condition. Still works!

For Sale

On display at the Gaithersburg, Montgomery County, Maryland Fair [USA], Ole' Timers Exhibit, in 1994.
Collector offered $38,000.00 then, but advised "do not sell" until the Millineum, per increase in value. To be fair.

2003 Expo Center Antique's & Auction Show, in Knoxville, Tennessee [USA]; appraised at $250,000.00 "as is" and/or more upon authentication. {Still searching}
