Just wanted to say after attending the Festival of History this year as a MOP rather than as a re-enactor I really enjoyed the WWI lot. The chaps from the National Army Museum were brilliant and the funniest and most entertaning thing I've see in re-enactment for years which was obvious because of the huge crowds they were attacting. The pretend aeroplane flight actually had me crying with laughter in places. Everyone there was very knowledgeable and really interested in talking to the public. I've never been sure about re-enacting in character but could easily be converted after seeing them this weekend. I came along expecting to enjoy the dog fight most of all but I think in fact I enjoyed walking round their camp more. Bl**dy good show chaps & chappesses.
It's also made me wonder (as I get a little tired of medieval as I do it for a job) about starting up in another period. My patner and I have discussed different periods we could but feel quite inspired to find if there are any WWI groups out there which we could both join. I used to do WWII but my partner felt uneasy with it so we need to look for something earlier. I presume it's quite difficult for a woman to find a WWI group to join. I saw some fab nurses at the FOH (and medicine is my interest in medieval) but what groups are out there please for somebody who doesn't have much WWI knowledge but is keen to learn and quite a quick learner.
We're based in North Essex but are used to travelling a lot so any groups within reasonable travelling distance are ok, particulary the south east of England but interested to hear about groups anywhere. Many thanks.
