HI all,

Asking on here for my brother who has an interest. With all of the crusade period groups in the UK does any group have a element that portrays the eastern troops who either fought with or against the western crusader armies?

This being a time period I re-enact - the closest thing I have seen is Dram Brodr / Crusade from Leicester, they are a University student group but have very nice kit.
Outside of that I don't know - but interested in knowing if there are other re-enactors doing this stuff

Crusade does the eastern stuff too - and in theory are doing a few battles in our season you might want in on.

Harewood House Saturday 30th June – Sunday 1st July
Despite doing harrying of the north for our battle, there should be crusader LH and possibly some form of tournament

Kelmarsh Hall Saturday 14th July – Sunday 15th July
Again, the primary battles are out of period *sulk face after last year* but LH and in camp will be crusades oriented

Detling Military Odyssey Saturday 25th August – Monday 27th August
Whole of our thing thing based around Hattin, including arena slot. Need I say more?

* We're still having trouble getting the name cleared up after a period change. In cliff notes:

* There once was a Vikings! group called Draum Broedr in Leicester
* Draum founded a new group in Birmingham (Hrafn Broethr)
* The Vikings! and these pair went their separate ways
* Hrafn founded a new group in Northampton (Brothers of the Hawk)
* Crusade formed from these three groups, and jumped from dark age to 12thC (turns out we were all into the period, and only needed a society to be part of - so we made our own! Tony Linthwaite (Duke/Society Head) has ~20 years experience of leadership, and he hasn't let us down yet.)
* Muggins became recruitment officer and things got *really* busy

Folks still call us Draum (forgetting/not being aware of the other groups, but no offense taken!) while the Crusade name beds in.

do you still draw the majority of your membership from University students who squeal alot and do a lot of 'monty python' talk ? hehe

We do recruit heavily from universities, however it would be an exaggeration to call us students. Doctor, teacher, author, market trader, middle manager - there's more to us than the undergrads. Not so much on the Monty Python and squealing though, at least not until the public have gone home for the day.

Re: The students. You get what you give - drag someone fresh out of school onto the field and treat them like an idiot, they'll act like an idiot. Treat them like an adult, they act like an adult.
Inspire them - and 8 years later they'll be helping grow and run your society

For the record, our oldest member is in their 60s, and youngest is 8.

Its like a Monty Python convention when the pubic have gone home - only thing missing is a cow being hurled from a trebuchet !

Despite the obvious flaws in Monty Python's historical portrayals I have heard one academic comment on the fact they they were spot on with the socio-economic dynamics of the periods they portrayed in their films. Having been a willing participant of Mr Cowley's world famous 'themed' parties, I am in no position to judge anyone's after hours antics . It could be said, it's not what brings us to reenactment that is important, it's what keeps us there.
