R I P GEORGE (magic mead)

Postby DevilStick Peat » Mon Oct 10, 2011 3:09 pm

I'm afriad I have some sad news about George (magic mead).

we were at an event in durham. On friday evening I helped him set up his stall. We then sat in his trailer and had a beer, He said he was going to have an early night as he didn't feel too good, so at around 8p.m. I left him and went to my hotel. At around 10 p.m. the event manager called me and told me that George passed away in his van.
he was a good man who gave me many a hang over.
If anyone knows of a family contact for him, please let me know

Very sad to hear this. Unfortunately no-one we know has that sort of detail. The hospital will need to contact the Consular Services of the German Embassy to trace his family back in Germany (has been suggested by a German friend who knows him that he might be from the former East Germany). I am sure there is someone at the hospital/coroner's service will be able to help with this in the absence of any friends/family in the UK coming forward.

Really gutted to hear this. Having worked with him several times in the past couple years, will miss his odd German sense of humour...

Also gutted to hear this. He hired us as 'protection' at one of the Berkeley Skirmishes, and paid us in blackcurrant wine. He will be terribly missed.

Just to clarify,
I believe the police have contacted his family. I wanted family contact details as I want to send a card (as one of the last people to see him, its the lest I can do)

Really bad news.
A great man, and very generous. He came to my rescue when the beer tent ran dry at the Oyster Fayre and introduced me to his wonderful Mead Beer. In his memory I have just opened a bottle of his absinthe which I have left untouched since Colchester.

Just found out on FB. Met him only once and that was at Tatton this year. Took to him instantly. Thoroughly nice bloke!

Will raise a glass or two ... pity I have no more of his Goblin Fire to do it with, it would have been most appropriate!

It will be much to early to give a cause of death. From what Peat has told us, the classic signs are those of a cardiac arrest, but it would be wrong to speculate too much before the inquest.-

I had a chat with him once, about Germany, and he was not from the former East, but from somewhere near Frankfurt. He told me he did electrical wiring on the giant tower blocks there when he was younger. And he mentioned family (a brother?) but I had the feeling they weren't getting along too well, maybe. And he was always going back in the winter and staying in a flat there, he had only a camper van to live in in his place on the Isle of Thanet.
And his real name was Götz Stengler. (George is a nickname he invented, after a famous German actor, 'cos nobody here could pronounce his real name, sounds familiar....)

Still shocked, this is how fast it can go, I'll miss him and his crazy ideas!

RIP George, may the mead never run dry!
If in doubt, add chili sauce.

Indeed a lovely man, taken far too soon.
We chatted at a few shows. Last time we met him he was one of the hardy few at Macclesfield - skulked with him in the van while waiting for the rain to ease, nipping out in short bursts to pick out a few more bottles off the stall. :drunk:

He gave me one of his little coins which has pride of place on my mantlepiece (along with some from Archeon).

Up to now tho, I have bought a few of his lovely bottles but can't bring myself to open them (including a couple of Goblin's Fire) - they look far too pretty to break the seal (have sampled tho, so I know the contents are de-lish). I have them lined up in the frontroom & had been contemplating recently.....

If there's any consolation, at least he went quickly, doing something that made him happy. Many of us will not be so lucky

Cracked open a bottle of no-name stuff instead to his memory - really no way that I can open any of these ones now.

Hope there's lots of mead where he's gone....

I'll send an email in German to the mead company HQ tonight, they have probably some family details re: condolence cards, or maybe they'll set up a page on their site, so we can all say how much we'll miss him.
If in doubt, add chili sauce.

He explained 'Gotz' (which he pronounced roughly 'Yurtz', or so it sounded to me), is also the name of a foolish character from German folklore, which is why he was happy to be George. I always imagined that he spelled it 'Jorge', like our friend on here.
I found a opened bottle of goblinfire in the fridge last night, and will pass it round at a certain wedding on Saturday, to those who knew him.
I wanted to do a cartoon of him arriving at the pearly gates with a large bottle of something interesting, and announcing that he was coming in to chat with his old friend God, and may be some time...but it got a bit smoky in here, and i had to give up.

I've spoken to the German company who make the stuff George was selling, and I've got the contact details for his brother. PM me, and I'll pass it on.

Oh my God I am so saddened by this news. Me and my family send his our deepest condolences.
My son Michael (9) is sorry to hear this news, he often helped george and enjoyed the time he spent with him.
He will be greatly missed.

We have worked together, before he startet with met and wine.
