Portable Forge

Hi, I'm looking into making myself a little portable forge (Not necessarily authentic), that I could use to make little bits and pieces and hopefully get good with it eventually.

Have you got any tips/ideas on how/where to get myself a cheap (I'm a student ) forge. I'm going to 'acquire' some railway line, courtesy of national rail (Only joking) to use as an anvil, and tools I can sort out too, but I'm stumped at the forge bit.

Any ideas?

well I sell 4 different types of rail in 6" to 12" lengths
I make forges and have used them at a few events.
have done a few taster sessions for begginers and at my place there are sometimes courses held ( and none of which is expensive )
where abouts are you?
if you were passing maybe you can see one in action and have a go

There's a vintage railway centre about two minutes from me and they have piles of spare rails so I should be ok for that.

I live just outside Cardiff, but I will be going to Caldicot and Mortimer's Cross if you're at any of those this month

You can convert the bottom of a gas water heater tank into a forge, or a cast iron hibachi can be fitted. Small, yes, but the fire pot is the most difficult part. The other things can be made from standard hardware.

I saw a smith at a local fair who had a portable forge made from an old steel ammo box filled with coke and connected to an electric blower. It did the trick.
