Knife Sheath

I've been doing a bit more leather carving, this time for a medieval knife sheath for a friend. I'm rather proud of it, so I thought that I'd share the pictures.

I was actually surprised at how simple the carving was. Infact, none of it was actually dificult to make, it just took a while.

Not as hard as doing bloody backseams.

Garish and tasteless...nice work Colin, I like it.
Have you used a fleur-de lys stamp in the diamond sections? If so, you need to hit it harder or case the leather more....or give it a wipe down with some saddle oil (not neatsfoot, it'll darken it too much, use 'Bees Natural Saddle oil' if you can get it) which'll darken the stamped detail a bit.

I know what you mean. I'm really pleased with the seams on this one too.

And I'll have you know that I put a lot of effort into identifying the right KIND of tastelessness!

Yes, I stamped the fleur's. I think that I'd got it on an unstable surface. Need to be careful of that in future. Thanks for the tip about the oil.

Pain in the *rse that it is, if you want stamping to work properly you need to give it a bit of a smack with a hard surface underneath. Bit of dowel with a flattened surface shoved inside normally does the job. Either that or you wet form it, stitch it, trace your design into the damp leather then unstitch it, dampen it again, flatten it out and then stamp it.

Which is a ballache.
