try being asked to use an axe in an entertaining way, especially when you are supposed to be dismembering a body, I was told it was..." a bit abrupt', I did point out that 'thats what axes do' but it was a bit lost on them unfortunately, so we hacked and chopped at this block of wood (just out of frame) until I had created enough kindling to last the winter.

It is often lost on these people that if you hit someone with a sword, axe, hammer, bullet they do generally just stop and fall down.
I was even asked what "style" I was using.
Given that the fella who showed me what i had done was a mean barsteward of a corp, a professional soldier teaching other professional soldiers how to kill I suspect it was "Slot some poor ****er before the ****ing ***t can do you ****ing ***ts" fu.

Art of Combat may be your friends- they are highly trained eastern and western martial artists who are also qualified fight directors/actors/captains looking to find an acceptable blend of the two disciplines.

There's a really nice week long course planned in New York if you're interested- details at http://www.artofcombat.org

This is their showreel-

The show at Traquir went ok, except for my mate’s armourers letting him down, so he’s in borrowed kit.
Video here,

sorry but the camera ran out just before the finale.

Thanks for your advice everyone,
Phil, I’m sure those American lads are great, but the reason I’m doing this is ‘cos I’m broke. The day this venture makes me enough brass for a holiday in NY is the day I don’t need advice. ‘Till then, keep it comin.

Norbury, I’m not keen on slowing it down any more than we have to, and shields are redundant in full armour. I want the fight to be fast paced, all the way through. We used longsword ‘cos its what I know best, though poleaxe is definitely an option. Maces need thought, I would have to devise some ‘interesting’ moves for after panel beating has worn thin. But its appealing, mace vs Gothic horseman’s axe.

Paul, I agree, but we cut out the halfsword bits I’d come up with ‘cos no-one could see what was happening from a distance. We are working on it, the whole thing is a compromise really. But we do need a good halfsword section. We have not done any explaining of the fight so far, we’re not really going for educational.

ta for your thoughts

Form a company then claim it as a business expense, along with your kit costs and insurance :)

Postby darrelltemplar » Thu Oct 01, 2009 3:31 pm

i thought it was good make sure however that they do take hits well as theres nothing worse than watching a reenactor who is limping one second then is fine about 10 secs later

if you want a trick for what my leader does when we do tournaments tell the winner to kneel so you can show your thanks in a knightly way then kill him/her its funny and shocking (by kill please dont actually kill anyone :p ) :D
bad name choice as no longer a templar ah well
for the morlais instead!

I know what you mean, but its not really practical to keep limping for the rest of the scrap.
Rubbish version of the website is here
http://www.featsofarms.co.uk,
I have a mate working on a more professional one. It links to my youtube channel with more versions of the same scrap. We've come up with 2 more scraps, but not had chance to record them yet. When the organiser gets round to sending me the Secret Garden Party video, i should have our flaming longsword fight between a knight and a viking. Moorcock or what?

Assuming that you're the same F0rre5t that I chatted to at Bosworth, I'd like to compliment you on the fight that you and Chris? did at Heckmondwyke. The surprise attack while praying raised a good laugh from the crowd and the fight progressed quickly, cleanly and well. A nice demonstration of many of the techniques.

Best wishes.
Colin

I was sure that his name was Chris, but yes that's him.

Ah well, at least I'm humiliating myself in public...
