You have to ask whether Theoretical Sock Science accurately models RealLife Sock Science.

Noel - you appear to have missed the point of tax-funded Theoretical research.
It quite deliberately can not accurately model RealLife because then the tax-paying MoPs would realize what they were paying for was boswolox.
Unless, of course, you are researching the "biscuit dunking in hot beverage" question which has far greater economic implications than odd socks - you can still wear odd socks, but once the biscuit has fallen into the tea both are ruined.

I am glad people are realising the shocking truth.
I feel it is a ploy by Tesco's to dominate the sock market. They have somehow woven destructo thread into the socks. And at a pre determined time they will self destruct, with sympathetic destruction of all nearby socks. others are woven with dyeit thread which causes a random colour to be initiatated!



3 months ago I bought 14 pairs of identical black socks and threw away all old socks -I now have 3 individual socks one of which is purple, and the other 2 dont match!

I have been warned about speaking out about this and even as I type I can see a dark car parked opposite with 2 indistinct figures watching from the front seats.

Malley - I disagree entirely.

When I was a boy, we used to let the end fall off our biscuit into our tea deliberately.

Then we would see who could drink their tea without disturbing the settlement.

If done successfully, the soggy remains could be removed with a spoon and sucked off the end with a delightful noise.

Just another way to add interest to the mundane tasks of a young boy in the post war 1950's.

I still do it today although not so deliberately.

Back on the sock issue - you cannot have mobeius socks, sorry G23b, however I recomend "Klein bottle" socks - they only have one surface, which is both inside and out!

I regret that your perception is mis-aligned. Yes, it has an inner and outer surface, but both surfaces are the same! Just as a mobeius strip only has one side (and one edge if you want to be pedantic)

Of course a one-sided 3D object is a Klein bottle (or a couple of others, iirc - does it not depend on the number of puntures, or something?)

Ok, assuming that there are no other ways of telling the socks apart in the dark (size, shape, texture, smell?) and you are looking to match an identical pair, then you will have to remove seven socks from the bag in order to guarantee that you will have two identical socks, due to the small possibility that the first six you remove will be all the same colour.

The probability is low, but it is still there.

If you remove six and they are all the same colour then you already have 3 identical pairs, and only a spider would need more than that at any one time (or millipedes, centipedes etc, but I've neve seen any of them wearing socks, whereas some of the spiders I've seen have definitely had socks!)

This of course assumes that all of these socks in the bag are from perfectly matched pairings and only the colours are different.

If the socks are to be of a matching colour, to be absolutely sure that at least two socks of your 200 pairs are the same colour, you will have to remove 101 socks, as there is still a 9.332621544394415268169923885627e+157 to 1 chance that the first 100 socks you remove will be the same colour. Which according to sod's law will happen 9 times out of 10.

If the colour of the socks is irrelevant, then you only need to pull out two socks to get a pair...

So I don't get a pair of socks the same colour from a bag full of socks of two colours of equal proportion, by pulling out three socks? And what do you mean by absolutely? Surely as soon as you have three socks you will get a pair of one of the two colours, the other is a discard, unless we are talking red hot chilli pepper situations of course.

There there Cat, just coax it back to its natural habitat at the bottom of the laundry basket and your grey sock will be fine. You tend to find the odd grey sock is quite adept at survival. No matter how many I throw in the bin, there always seems to be one lurking at the back of my sock draw.
