Dear one and all,

News for all you beer and cider lovers. I am a turner and furniture maker from Northamptonshire. I hand turn medieval style beer tankards, from locally sourced timbers, such and sycamore, cherry, apple, Elm, Oak and even Yew. My Tankards are finish with a food safe finish which last many years. isn't Yew toxic?

Yes Yew is poisonious, the sap and the needles and the husk of the berry... the tankards are sealed.

Glad to hear they are sealed but apart from coopered mugs (tigg/tygg etc) then i haven't seen anything similar. Unless its in pewter danging from an SK members belt of course.....

I know Gareth has made some earlier ones with nice silver rims.

They don't have to have fancy rims and decorations, but the right profile and maple ones seem to be v popular.

I agree with you Mark. Right profile and dimensions, proper wood and I believe a lot of people would have their purse quite ready.

James here, Robin Wood and other wood workers would be perfectly able to make them mazers... Straight, simple ones and, even, fancy silver rimmed ones for the well-off with exquisite tastes...

How many people here, apart from you and me, are called Jorge? You everybody knows. Me, almost all don't. Unless there's somebody here who used to go the annual medieval reenactment meetings in the castle of Terena, in Portugal, some years ago. I run the event along with other OCSP staff.

People from Y Cantreff, Medieval Combat Society, Woodville Household and others, from the UK and other countries alike, attended once, twice or all of the meetings until the event ended.

I've been retired regarding reenactment, but I'm planning to get back to it. I'm particularly interested in the second half of the 15th century, circa 1475.

Well, it proves he enjoys some of the pleasures of life... That's what's this thread, in a way, is all about... Tankards, or mazers, what are they for?

Cheers, Mark! No problem at all regarding myself. I thought you were just talking to a fellow re-enactor, not to a well known friend of yours. As far as I know the only time we met before was via this selfsame forum, when I PMed you a document regarding King Joao I's jupon.
