Brilliant!

Do trolls understand irony though?

Unlikely! There are not many things that make me laugh out loud (as I'm generally a miserable bint) but this did. :D

Never understood why someone would want to spend theit letting complete strangers know that they are a [insert expletive of choice] :?

Isn't calling them trolls a bit insulting though... To trolls of course. Fine creatures of Scandinavian myth

I think they're called trolls because more accurate nomenclatures do not pass through swear filters, and may be insulting to onanists.

Brilliant quote in the latest issue of the The Word magazine from a guy called Bob Pate who was a "beat" musican in the '60s. He describes one incident concerning a band called the Honeycombs who had a girl drummer:

The Honeycombs had girl drummer and on the night we played with them some troll in the audience made a disparaging remark about her. The guitarist jumped off the stage and smacked him one, breaking his hand to make the point.

Nothing new is there?

Throughout history all cultures have a rich and documented history of complete twunts. Trouble is, now they have an easily anonymous forum in which to peddle their bile.
