A portuguese cote armour/gambeson c1385

Postby Mark Griffin » Thu Mar 15, 2012 7:16 pm

Just found this, worn by King Dom João I in the battle of Aljubarrota (14th August 1385) along with an artists impression.

Niiiiiiiice! never seen this, there is still stuff to discover!

There’s a country in Europe where they treat their ex soldiers with pride no waits for medical treatment after injuries received during service, no amensia from the government. Cant for the life of me recall where it is but I know exactly where it is not.

looks like the buttons are right on the edge of the right hand side, pretty typical for the period, with a plastron behind to ensure no gap. Its not really a primary defensive garment so doesn't need to be too chunky. I'm in that neck of the woods late July so might try and pop in.

If that is in the Batalha museum, I will have a gander this summer, we will be staying up the road from it.

I may inform you that this gambeson is not in Batalha. It is in the north of Portugal, in a museum called Museu de Alberto Sampaio, in a town called Guimaraes. Museum address and contacts:

Rua Alfredo Guimarães, 4800-407 Guimarães
Tel.253423910 Fax. 253423919
Email: masampaio@imc-ip.pt

Unfortunately, I haven't got any pictures of the gambeson, but I've translated to English a very detailed document on its restoration. Will send it, free, in PDF format (7 pages), to anybody interested providing a regular e-mail address.

During a Google search just found a link to a gallery of pictures of the gambeson taken in the museum itself:

http://www.villaggiomedievale.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2798

Click the link below the words 'LINK AL REPORTAGE FOTOGRAFICO' and you can view them. I'm not displaying the link right here because there's a warning in Italian not to use, divulge or reproduce the pictures there in any way.

Obrigado Jorge.

Nuts, that is a bit far away from where we are staying.

We will be going to Batalha in any case. Not sure if the wife would let me go to Guimarães, mind, you never know ;-)

You're most welcome, Gregory. Yes, Guimaraes is a bit far from Batalha, but it's really worthwhile, not just because there's an interesting piece of medieval apparel in a museum there, but because there's quite a lot to visit: the medieval castle, the huge XVth century palace of the Duke of Bragança and the medieval part of the town with its peculiar, charming houses. A great place to visit.
