Repro 17th C Chair

We have just finished making this 17th century chair for the living history village at Little Woodham http://www.littlewoodham.org.uk . It was based on and amalgam of several pieces in the V & A and is part of a series of items of furniture that include settles, table, benches, beds (truckle and plain). As we are a company that teaches vulnerable adults carpentry we were especially pleased as it was made by one of our trainees.

It's very nice but why has it been stained?

We were given the job of replacing most of the existing furniture in the eight period buildings this included settles, beds ,
tables and benches and chairs. Budget was limited as the Society wants to thatch the new Apothecarys house as well. All items
were therefore made in softwood,stained and polished to copy examples in the museums we visited when researching.

Very nice, but echo John's comment about the staining. Most of the darkness on museum pieces is due to yers of polish and dirt. The originals were quite light see Peter Follansbee Blog for details of what period piece look like when they are fresh

Points taken but we followed the customers brief and that was for old well used furniture that had been probably handed down in wills that had been lovingly cared for.Left to ourselves we would have done it in oak and left it natural.

nice work. I understand why its stained, no worries. Do you take commissions? I'd love something like that for my hall which was built 1550 but buggered about with (inserted spine beam and 'inglenook' in the mid 17th probably.
